Emporio

Emporio is located at the south part of Santorini. It is the biggest village of the island with long history which dates back to the 16th century and has been the commercial center of the island (the word emporio means trade in Greek).

Entering the village when coming from Fira, you can see 8 windmills in a row. However, the most important sight is the well preserved medieval castle and the Goulas fort which are worth visiting.

Inside the castle the old church of Panagia Messiani is located, while in the Goulas fort you can visit the churches of Agia Kyriaki and Agios Artemios. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the well preserved medieval castle to travel back in time!

Tip

Two festivals take place in Emporio, in August and in October, offering a good opportunity to get in touch with the local traditions!

Emporio is located about 10km from Fira and it is close to Perissa, Perivolos and Vlychada, so you can visit it on your way to the beaches. You can also stop by for a coffee, lunch or dinner in one of the taverns.
