Fira

Fira is the capital of Santorini since the end of 18th century and one of the most picturesque places of Greece. It is located at the edge of the cliffs overlooking caldera, at 260 meters height.

The narrow cobbled streets at the center of Fira are only accessed by feet and are full of white and blue colorored small shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, nightclubs, as well as museums and galleries.

Every corner offers an opportunity for a nice picture, especially on the quieter times of the day, in the morning and early in the afternoon when most of the people visit the beaches and the city reveals all of its beauty.

Fira is busy, as the commercial and cultural center of Santorini, but at the same time it is very romantic with magnificent views on the volcano and the Aegean Sea.

Walking around the small streets, you will end to the edge of the cliffs, where the views and the calmness of the place will take your breath away! The magical and unique atmosphere that you will certainly feel once being there, cannot be captured in the pictures that travel around the world!

On this side of the cliffs overlooking the sea and Thirassia island, you will find some of the most romantic hotels, carved in the cliff, with infinity pools just above the sea and rooms with unique views. Some of the best restaurants and bars are also located there, serving local and international cuisine and cocktails.

The cathedral of Fira with the white arches, the church of Ipapanti, is worth a visit.

Walking down from Fira the almost 600 steps, you will reach the old port of Thira, where small boats drop off passengers of the cruise ships which anchor in the bay and other boats depart for day trips to the Volcano at Nea Kameni island, the hot springs at Palaia Kameni island, Thirasia island and Oia. There are a few shops and restaurants for those wishing to spend some time there and relax before going back to Fira. If you are not fit enough, especially as the way up is a bit tough, you can hop on a donkey or take the cable car.

At night, there are entertainment choices for every taste at Fira, varying from street food to upscale restaurants and from cafes, lounge bars, jazz and rock bars with live music to trendy clubs.

At the north of Fira there is an area called Firostefani, meaning crown of Fira, once a separate village which has now become a suburb of Fira. It offers great views to the volcano.

Tip

Wake up early in the morning to wander around the empty cobbled streets and drink a coffee in a café with volcano view. It will be almost like being alone in the island and really feel the tranquility and unique atmosphere of Santorini!

East of Fira there is another suburb called Kontochori. You will get there either on foot or by car, heading to Oia.

You can access Fira by car, taxi, public transport or by boat up to the old port and then by cable car.

The distance from the airport to Fira is less than 6km, from Athinios port is 8km and from Oia is 11km.
