Kamari is a popular tourist place at the southeast of Santorini, which was developed during the last decades.
It has a long black sand beach which is organised with sunbeds, umbrellas, water-sports, beach volley courts, showers, lifeguard, bars, cafes and restaurants.
Kamari lies under Mesa Vouno mountain, where is the settlement of Ancient Thira.
The ruins of Ancient Thira date back to 8th century BC. You can see the ancient market, Dionysos temple, the theatre, the sanctuary of Karneios Apollonas and the cemeteries, while you can enjoy the great view.
In order to visit Ancient Thira, you have to walk on a long path which starts from Kamari. An ancient sanctuary dedicated to Achilles, the legendary hero of Homer’s Iliad was discovered in Kamari in 2002.
Kamari is a good choice for families due to the beach and the variety of available facilities which can keep adults and children busy all day long!
The heart of the day and the night life of the village beats on the promenade that runs along the beach, which is full of restaurants, cafes and bars. The long stone-paved sidewalk is ideal for walking and looking around. During summer time, the road which runs parallel to the beach is closed off for vehicles and many artists demonstrate their art.
The open air cinema that operates in Kamari is one more entertainment option for the summer evenings.
In Kamari there are various hotels, beachfront or not, some of them with swimming pools, for all tastes and budgets.
It is located less than 9km from Fira and there is a regular bus connection with the main villages of the island either directly or through Fira.
