Megalochori

Megalochori is a traditional village at a strategic position in the center of the island, which hosts nice old mansions, vineyards, three wineries, some restaurants with good local cuisine and a few nice hotels.

The history of the village dates back to 17th century and is known for the sweet red wine Vinsanto which is produced here and exported to the whole world. You can visit the wineries, taste the local wines and get to know the production procedure.

The square of Megalochori is the place where the locals have a coffee and play cards or backgammon under the shadow of the trees. You can also find there some nice traditional restaurants.

On the caldera side there are some nice hotels with great view to the volcano. In fact, accommodation at Megalochori is a very good option in terms of value for money, because you can book a hotel with magnificent view of the caldera in lower prices compared to Oia or Fira, if you don’t mind taking short rides to Fira and the beaches.

Tip

Staying at Megalochori you can enjoy magnificent caldera views, paying much less than Oia or Fira!

Megalochori is only 9km distance from Fira, 6km from Perivolos and 7km from Kamari.

It is an ideal place to stay if you have your own or rented vehicle. If not, you can move around by bus which will take you to the main attractions of the island.
