Oia is one of the most romantic places you will ever see. This traditional village with the cave houses carved into the volcanic rocks, the beautiful terraces and the world famous sunset will take a place in your heart forever.

It is located 150 meters above sea level overlooking caldera, at the north part of Santorini. The white houses with the colorful doors and windows, the narrow streets and the small churches create a unique scenery.

Oia has a relaxing and luxury atmosphere, hosting many of the best hotels of Santorini, upscale restaurants, art galleries, nice shops and jewelries stores.

The nightlife in Oia is calm, so if you look for parties, this is not the right place to be. On the other hand, it is ideal for couples and honeymooners and those wishing to enjoy the magnificent view, having a drink and listening to lounge music.

At the afternoon, the village is filled with people coming from all over the island to enjoy the sunset. The sunset has somehow turned to an event, with many people coming early to get a space with a good view, having their cameras ready to take photos of the red colored horizon and applauding when the sun finally goes down. After that, the crowd gradually leaves and Oia is becoming quiet again.

The cave houses used to be the homes of ship crews, while the captains’ houses were not carved into the cliffs.

Visit Oia early in the morning or at night when the place is less crowded than sunset time and you can really enjoy the views and take some nice photos without big groups of tourists around you!

Once being in Oia, you should also visit the small port just below, called Ammoudi. This is a really picturesque place, a small cove under the cliffs with colorful boats at its small port and fish restaurants just by the sea.

Every morning the fishermen sell their catch of the day to the restaurants. In the afternoon, you will see some of them in their boats unraveling their nets. Don’t forget to take your camera with you!

Most of the people visit Ammoudi to have a dinner, but you can also swim into the sea and sunbath on the rocks.

The distance from Fira to Oia is 11km and you can get there by your own vehicle or public transport. If you intend to visit Oia for the sunset during the summer, allow at least 30-45 minutes for your transport from Fira due to the traffic.

Vehicles are not allowed in the center of the village, but there is a parking just outside. Due to relatively limited space, it might take some time to find a free space during rush hours.
