Pyrgos

Pyrgos is a hillside village at the center of the island, former capital of Santorini before Fira. It offers panoramic views from Akrotiri to Oia. On the top of the hill there are ruins of the Kasteli Castle.

The former glory of the place is evident from the beautiful churches and the mansions, which are harmonically combined with the small white houses of the less wealthy inhabitants.

The village is also home to wineries, galleries, traditional restaurants and cafes with very nice views. It offers also good opportunities for shopping traditional products and herbs, wines and local spirits like Tsipouro.

Tip

Visit Pyrgos in Holy Good Friday when the whole hill is lit up with candles and there is an absolutely spiritual atmosphere!

If you get there on Easter time, you will be able to experience a magic Holy Good Friday as the whole hill is lit up with candles. Easter Sunday is celebrated with fireworks, lamb on the spit and wine.

Due to its proximity to Fira (6km), Kamari (5km) and Perissa (9km) it is a good option for staying if you don’t mind to move around a little.

There are regular bus schedules which pass through the village to get to Fira and the main sites of the island. The hotels in Pyrgos offer accommodation in good prices.
