Santorini offers many hiking opportunities, here are some of the best hiking routes you should try when you are on the island.
Hike from Fira to Oia
One of the best hiking trails in Santorini is from Fira to Oia. This path lies next to caldera, starting from Fira and moving north to Firostefani and Imerovigli ends to Oia. Starting from Fira cable car, you move towards the Petros Nomikos Conference Centre and then keep walking next to caldera. The 9km route provides wonderful views and you will need between 2 and 4 hours to reach Oia, depending on your speed. During summer months you should better start early in the morning or late in the afternoon to admire the sunset.
Hike Skaros rock
Hike the Skaros rock to take a look at the ruins of the fortified settlement and former capital of Santorini. Due to its strategic position, it offers incredible views. You can also visit the church of Panagia Theoskepasti located west of Skaros.
Another path starts from Prophet Elias monastery at the top of Pyrgos village to the Ancient Thira. This is an easy 45 minutes downhill trail that provides beautiful views to Kamari and Perissa.
From Ancient Thira you can follow another trail going downhill to Perissa. It will take you about 30 minutes walking on a clearly visible path.
Hike on volcano
For a different experience, hike on volcano at Nea Kameni island. It will take you 20 minutes to reach the top of the volcano, while you will feel the heat from the ground. You’d better wear shoes and not flip-flops to protect your feet.
The visit to Nea Kameni is usually combined with a visit to the hot thermal springs where you can relax before going back to Fira. Check here for more info.
Alternatively, if you prefer biking instead of walking, you can take an electric biking tour in the most beautiful places in Santorini.
